Nikon unveils a new version of one of its most iconic telephoto zooms: the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II. This second generation of the renowned 70-200mm for Z mount brings significant improvements in weight, autofocus, optical quality, and ergonomics, while maintaining the constant f/2.8 aperture much appreciated by professional photographers.
Designed for demanding users—sports, wildlife, photojournalism, events, or portraiture—this new lens promises even higher performance and greater versatility.
A significantly lighter and more compact lens
One of the major developments concerns the reduction in weight. The new Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II weighs only 998g, making it one of the lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms in its class for full-frame mirrorless cameras.
Compared to the first generation, this represents approximately 26% less weight, or over 360g saved. The lens is also slightly shorter, improving handling and reducing fatigue during long shooting sessions.
The zoom remains internal, meaning the lens length does not change when zooming. The balance therefore remains constant, an important advantage for video and use on a gimbal.
Next-generation autofocus: faster and quieter
Nikon has integrated a new autofocus system using the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM).
This system offers significantly improved performance:
- autofocus up to 3.5 times faster
- subject tracking improved by approximately 40%
- quieter operation
- smoother focus transitions for video
This increase in speed and precision makes it easier to capture fast-moving subjects such as athletes, animals, or action scenes.
Even more advanced optical quality
Like all lenses in the S-Line series, this new 70-200mm benefits from an advanced optical design.
The lens uses 18 elements in 16 groups, including:
- ED and Super ED glass
- fluorite element
- aspherical elements
- SR (Short-wavelength Refractive) element
Several latest-generation optical coatings are also present:
- Meso Amorphous Coat
- ARNEO Coat
- fluorine coating on the front element
These technologies effectively reduce:
- chromatic aberrations
- flare
- ghosting
The result is exceptional sharpness from the center to the edges, as well as a particularly soft bokeh, thanks to an 11-blade circular aperture.
High-performance optical stabilization
The Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II integrates an optical VR stabilization system offering up to 6 stops of compensation.
This allows handheld shooting even at long focal lengths or in low light conditions. In combination with the in-body stabilization of compatible Nikon Z cameras, performance is further enhanced.
Improved close focusing
The minimum focusing distance has also been optimized:
- 0.38 m at 70mm
- 0.8 m at 200mm
The magnification ratio reaches 0.3×, making the lens even more versatile for shooting details or close-up subjects.
A design conceived for professionals
Nikon has also improved the ergonomics and robustness of the lens:
- Arca-Swiss compatible tripod collar
- customizable buttons
- configurable control ring
- weather-sealed construction against dust and moisture
- reduced focus breathing for video
The lens remains compatible with Nikon Z teleconverters, allowing even longer focal lengths to be reached:
- with a 1.4× TC: up to 280mm
- with a 2.0× TC: up to 400mm
A versatile lens for many uses
Thanks to its focal range and constant f/2.8 aperture, the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is an extremely versatile lens.
It is particularly suitable for:
- sports photography
- wildlife photography
- weddings and events
- portraiture
- photojournalism
- professional video
In a professional kit, it often perfectly complements a 24-70mm f/2.8.
